Do the new plugs show the same discoloration? Since this post is a couple of days old, you have probably already given it a tuneup. Mine has always run with all plugs tan, except for #6 plug, which is darker than the rest. I wouldn't assume that the intake design dictates spark plug color. Adjust the idle mixture with the screw on the outside of the carb. Is the carbon "buildup" on the plugs if you take it out for a hard run, then pull the plugs? Or, is it possible that the choke or idle mixture is making some of the plugs black? It is possible that a jet in a carb with LOTS of miles on it is eroded to a larger size. If it's the correct jet for that car and carb, changing it to a smaller size will only throw in another variable. "How do I change the air/fuel mixture"? To do this, you must replace the jet inside the carb. Why do you think the carb needs overhauled? I would do the tuneup first, and see if my problems don't go away. Have you checked your timing? This shouldn't have anything to do with the plugs, but may explain why it runs a bit doggy. When you say "the other plugs look OK", do you mean they look white, or are they tan, or just a lack of build-up? Are your plugs the recommended heat range for your engine? I also happened to check the oil a few days ago and the dip stick was. I read on other threads that a bit of oil on the thread of the spark plug is normal but nothing regarding the tip. The fuel supply increases as the ECU attempts to adjust the fuel. Is the buildup on your problem plugs black, or brown? Is it a black soot, or a real BUILDUP? I was recently changing my spark plugs and wires and noticed one of the spark plugs (passanger side, 2nd from front) had a bit of oil on the tip. When there is oil on the spark plug, it affects the engines efficiency and how it burns fuel. In my experience with other vehicles, I am aware the spark plug.

The mechanic said the spark plugs were covered with oil and that the rings were worn. Today the truck finally died on the side of the road, fortunately in front of a Toyota mechanics shop. The list goes on, and on, just trying to see if anyone on here my be able to shed some light on an area that I may not be thinking about or don't know for that matter.Suggestion of other posters to replace the ignition components to give it a good tune-up are good. The truck has been misfiring for a few years now. Passenger side headlight not working either due to wiring issue, so I pulled that one too, and overlayed it as well. If you have trouble holding onto the plug, you can buy. You have to do it by hand or you run the risk of starting the plug crooked and ruining the threads on the plug or the threads in the spark plug hole in the engine. Temperature and a/c wasn't working either. Carefully begin threading the spark plug into the engine by hand, turning it clockwise. Bought and installed all new coil packs, spark plugs, 02 sensors, etc. July 2012 Wiring harness overlayed, and btw the car was missing on 5 cylinders when they gave it back to me.

The wiring harness that runs from the drivers side fender through the firewall and interior to the trunk. I decided to take the car home, and do it myself. They said it would cost at least 2500 to overlay the harness, because they couldn't find one. I leave it with them to get it running 7 weeks later they call, and said that it was running but didn't know how they did it.(Go figure) They also say that they found a wiring harness that had melted several of the wires together causing a ton of issues. They said it was the computer so I purchased a new computer, and had them flash it.still wont start. June 2012 Took the car to the dealership to tell me whats wrong and fix it. Went through everything that I could think of to fix the issue to no avail.
